About our cause
We are a local charity established by parents of deaf children in Wigan (Registered Charity Number: 1153578).
There are about 300 deaf children in the Wigan Borough, and most are born into families with no experience of deafness. Most deaf children also go to mainstream school, and they are often the only deaf child in their class or even in their school. It is important for them to grow up knowing other deaf children and that is where we come in. We arrange regular activities for deaf children and their families. We offer something for children of all ages from pre-schoolers to teenagers and are a local source of support for families of newly identified deaf children.
We organise events and activities that are fully inclusive for deaf children and their families. These include Stay & Play sessions for our younger children (aged 0-6 years), family events for all ages, youth events for children in year 6 (age 10) upwards and deaf friendly swimming lessons for children aged 3 and above to Swim England Stage 4.
Deaf children struggle in mainstream swimming lessons due to larger class sizes, large open pool areas and other lessons going on around them. We use a local facility with a small, enclosed pool and exclusive use. Our instructors are Swim England qualified and follow the Swim England programme. Lessons start from aged 3 upwards and enable our children to be confident in the water. Class size is limited to 5 children per session and all instructors have undertaken deaf awareness and basic BSL for swimming training. We feel that swimming is a life skill and therefore it is very important that every child has access to inclusive lessons.
Our Stay & Play sessions are ideal for families to support each other, share ideas and experiences. We hold them monthly at venues around the borough. Over the years strong friendships have been made amongst the parents and children and they have grown together and are now able to support others.
Our Youth Group Events are for children from Year 6 upwards. We let our young people decide what events or activities they would like to access, they have been to the Roller Rink, Trampolining, Escape Rooms, Bowling etc. During these sessions we have seen new friendships form and the older children help the younger children with transition to high school and help with any other problems they have growing up being a deaf child.
Money raised will enable deaf children, their parents/guardians and their wider family to access events and activities that are tailored to their needs. The events enable the children and their families to access advice from our experienced members, Teachers of the Deaf and Young People while also building support networks with other families.
Most of our events are subsidised to help families during the ‘cost of living crisis’.
We need your help so we can continue to offer and even expand our service!
Thank you for your support and good luck!
